For a great Disco Party you need great party music and an experienced Party DJ can make the occasion a super celebration. Most people do not realise, that what we think of as great music might not work so well in a party situation. An extreme example of this would be Y.M.C.A, if this tune came on the radio most people would switch channel. However in some party's and played at the right time this tune can bring everyone onto the dance floor and join in the fun. But lets not get carried away with the idea that party dances always work in fact for most parties an experienced DJ will apply a much more subtle approach.

With the available technology today its relatively easy to obtain a huge collection of music, don't be impressed with the claim "we have 100000's tracks available" etc. Any DJ no matter how good or bad can only play about 70 tunes in a 4 hour party. The essential thing is for the DJ to know which tunes will work for the audience and more importantly what's best to leave out. At the beginning of most parties the audience will not be taking much notice in the DJ but the DJ should be taking notice of the audience. At this point the DJ will make informed guesses as to what's best to play and judge reactions. With experience the DJ can hone in on preferred styles, this does not mean if the audience is younger the DJ just plays chart music or if there are more people of senior years play just golden oldies etc, the DJ will need to find an appropriate balance. An experienced party DJ will never assume if there is a larger number of people of a certain age the music mix should reflect this.

Often A Mobile Disco may claim "we only play only the best music" perhaps they think there are some mobile discos that intend to only play the worst music; we think this is nonsense. Every party is different and everyone has different tastes in music. What we think of as best music will depend entirely on the mood we are in at the time. If you are stuck in a traffic jam and Y.M.C.A came on your car radio it would not cheer you up one bit, however this type of upbeat dance record, played at the right time in a party can create a collective feeling of goodwill. Its also true to say a record like this played at many party's will cause the "what's the DJ playing at question?" to be asked. Any experienced party DJ will be trying to create a positive atmosphere and will need to have a huge knowledge of all types of music to do this. Its essential to select the right music for the audience and to build the party momentum, if one tune works the DJ will need to follow this up with something similar. If this process works well it will lead to the moment when everyone joins in and gets involved in the dance floor action.
